How do you teach your child about values and standards that no longer apply to our society today?
When my scholars and I wrote the first edition of How I Was Raised, we focused on morals and standards passed down from generation to generation meant to bring honor and respect to the family name.
People of my generation were taught that everything you do reflects those who loved and raised you.
In the neighborhood and the schools where I work, students constantly tell me that their mother said, “Always get your lick back.” But when their child suffers the consequences of their actions, they want their child to be the victim.
There used to be a time when it was safe to say that when you know better, you will do better. Unfortunately, when you have broken and not adequately educated parents raising kids, you cannot blame them for not being able to teach them life values and skills they never learned or struggled to apply in their lives.
I was raised to understand and know what it means that it takes a village to raise a child. That concept means that everyone who encounters that child daily has the responsibility/duty to ensure that they are helping them to become the best version of themselves by leading by example.
In this book, My Co-Authors and I will share the values we were raised to follow, including why we will gladly share them with the next generation.
