This is an English translation of a Vietnamese language book by Nguyễn-Đức-Cung entitled “History of the Highland Region According to ‘The Account of the Barbarian Province’” (Lịch-Sử Vłng Cao Qua Vũ Man Tạp Lục Thư). Cung translates an important ancient (1871) document written in Chinese characters by a Vietnamese (Đại-Việt) General about the Đại-Việt’s pacification, administration, and care of the mountain minorities of Central Vietnam, a document which had never been available completely, even in contemporary Vietnamese. He also provides critical review of existing literature on the issue and detailed explanatory notation on the ancient document itself. As such Cung’s book is the “last word” on the history of relationships between the Vietnamese and the mountain minorities whom they encountered in Central Vietnam in their “advance to the South” (Nam Tiến). The translation was done collaboratively by Donald Voth and Nguyễn-Đức-Cung in 2024.
