For a long time, women in India and around the world were not granted equal rights to men and were often overlooked in the field of science. However, this situation has begun to change. Women have demonstrated that they can excel in nearly any profession traditionally held by men. Figures like Kalpana Chawla, who flew in outer space, and Tessy Thomas, known as the "Missile Woman," represent a new generation of talented and skilled women.
This booklet aims to introduce some of India’s women scientists who have not received the recognition they deserve. Often, we learn about women who have carved their identities while working as assistants to their renowned husbands or brothers. This effort seeks to highlight India’s early women scientists and pathologists. The author felt that it’s important to acknowledge their contributions.
Recently, under the auspices of the Department of Women and Child Welfare of the Government of India, chairs have been established in various institutions in honour of 11 pioneering Indian woman scientists, along with several others. Many Indian women scientists are thriving abroad, but this book focuses on those who have made significant contributions within India.
