(Up-dated January 2026) An English rock band, Slade was formed in the late 1960s in Wolverhampton, West Midlands, but the band didn’t find success until the early 1970s, when they went on to become one of the foremost glam rock bands in the world.
The four members of Slade were Dave Hill (guitar), Noddy Holder (lead vocals & guitar), Don Powell (drums) and Jim Lea (bass guitar). Before becoming simply Slade in 1970, the band were known as the ‘N Betweens, then Ambrose Slade, and then The Slade.
Slade scored their first hit single Get Down And Get With It in 1971, and between 1971 and 1974 the band topped the UK singles chart six times and the album chart three times, and their Christmas single Merry Xmas Everybody returns to the chart every year in the UK.
Slade disbanded in the early 1990s, when first Noddy Holder and then Jim Lea quit the band. Noddy Holder was awarded an MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the 2020 honours list, for his services to showbusiness.
For the purposes of this book, to qualify as a Top 40 hit, a single or album must have entered the Top 40 chart in at least one of the featured countries. The Top 40 hits are detailed chronologically, according to the date they first entered the chart in one or more of the featured countries. Each Top 40 single and album is illustrated and the catalogue numbers and release dates are detailed for the UK, followed by the chart runs in each country.
The main listings are followed by ‘The Almost Top 40 Singles/Albums’, which gives an honourable mention to singles and albums that peaked between no.41-50 in one or more countries, but which failed to enter the Top 40 in any. There is also a points-based list of the Top 20 singles and Top 10 albums, plus a fascinating Trivia section, which looks at the most successful singles and albums and in each of the featured countries.
