Sinossi
As the Palas Duchy grew into a continent spanning empire, it added enemies on both sides of its borders. Crime went up. Dangerous wizards were handled by the new Office of Witchfinder General. The OWG was divided into two major departments.
The Nine-Finger Club investigates minor crimes inside the empire's borders, concerned with unlicensed criminal wizards.
The witchfinders deal with large scale matters: cultism, protecting the state apparatus, and matters outside the empire's borders.
Seven years after the assassination attempt on the Grand Duke's son, young Nut is a witchfinder stationed in the far reaches of the empire. He expects to be forgotten and never rise in the ranks due to his low station.
Lady Emberlina Tilby has bucked the life of a highborn lady for the rough lifestyle of a nine-finger. She spends her days traipsing through the Palas sewers in search of crime to punish.
The two have forgotten their shared youth in Edwin's manor but circumstances will thrust them together once more. A cult is taking root in Palas.
