This is an illustrated genealogy of my mother’s family, the Swiss Engels and the American Engles beginning in Rothenbach, Switzerland in 1600, and of my father’s family, the Kellys and the Kelleys, beginning in Dublin in 1617. It’s the story of Jacob Engel, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, who came to Philadelphia on the sailing ship Phoenix in 1754 with his parents and seven brothers and sisters to escape religious persecution in Switzerland. The Engels were Mennonites and Anabaptists. Jacob Engel was a founder and first bishop of “The River Brethren” which exists today as “The Brethren in Christ Church.” It’s also an account of my great-grandfather, Miles Kelley, who fathered my grandfather at age 62, and of my great-grandfather, Wyatt Milliken, a surveyor who laid out states and counties in the Midwest. And it’s the story of my ancestor, Beal Kelley, who was born in Maryland in 1750 and fought in the Revolutionary War.
