This is the life story of Henry Reeves a man born in the market town of Walsall in 1843 to poor working class parents. He describes his early childhood hardships and the living conditions for the poverty stricken people who lived in cramped and overcrowded slums. He held on to a burning desire to escape the trappings of his social environment and at sixteen joins the military. Within weeks he finds himself in a war zone half way around the world in Chinese fields of carnage. He miraculously survives his ordeal and via Africa becomes one of the widow queens bodyguard of men on the Isle of Wight. When his regiment returns to Aldershot he leaves the army and returns home to his family in Walsall. Thirteen years have past and things have changed, not all for the best. He marries and joins Walsall Borough police but things never run smoothly. He describes his trials and tribulations, the death of family members and the chance meeting of a murderers widow. His roguish half brother becomes the head of the local crime team and target of his employers resources. The brothers stand poles apart only connected by their mothers best efforts in a tense atmosphere of distrust. Henry retired from the police but was world is shattered when his wife dies before the beginning of the new century. Things come to a head in 1907 when his brother and other family members are arrested following a covert police sting operation. Everyone wants to know who grassed them up and the spotlight shines on Henry. After his brother is released from prison Henry decides to take his youngest two children to the United States and leave the family trouble behind. His challenges of bringing up two teenage children alone are described together with his own advancing years. The First World War brutally rips into the family numbers back in England leaving every part of them traumatised by the life changing catastrophe. In the final part of his life, Henry moves to California to be with his daughter and her family. Henry then tells the strange tale of how he manages to get his life story told in the form of a book from his world in the afterlife.
