EXCERPT - A SHADOW OF TROUBLE

I stared at the glass bowl in horror, not believing my eyes. Everything had been fine last night. I'd corrected the water's pH and checked the temperature, just as I was supposed to. I've raised plenty of critters before without mishap--fish, lizards, gerbils, cats, and dogs. I know fish die frequently, but he'd seemed fine before I went to bed. Not swimming a jitterbug. This morning, it seems, there was only one possible explanation. My ancestors had killed my fish. At least that's my working theory.
