Winter’s finally coming to an end, and the Spear family is making preparations to finish the final leg of their long journey. Woody has developed a very unique way to forecast the weather and has assured them that by mid-February the icy conditions will be just a bitter memory. Other citizens of Blanco are dead set on convincing them to stay. Their efforts fail and they bid farewell to Dave and Sarah as the family sets out on horseback with an armed escort, courtesy of an area rancher. The departure is bittersweet, and Judge Moore tells Red not to worry. “Mark my words,” he says. “They’ll be back.” In San Antonio, Kristy strikes a deal with the “chicken man” for two hens and a “quiet rooster,” and gets a bonus she never expected.
