This book is a collection of memories from members of the VA-164 attack squadron, assembled forty-nine years after our experiences of 1972. As Naval Aviators, we naturally admire the person we see in the mirror and are likely to blurt out bits of non-wisdom such as “Better dead than look bad.” We took pride in the moniker given to us by the enemy, Yankee Air Pirates, while shunning the attention heaped upon us during the war. The additional years have added some humility, time and the effects of Mother Nature having forced us to realize we might be less God-like than we previously thought, a realization encouraged by loving spouses and families.
Since these memories are a half-century old, there may be occasional details that are subject to scrutiny, even crossing into the realm of Sea Stories. Certain facts, however, bear no contradiction. During the 1972 combat cruise, over 4000 missions were executed without the loss of a single pilot or aircraft, an astonishing record that had never been achieved in 7 years of combat!
So, here’s to the professionalism of the Ghost Riders, officers, sailors, and aviators who made these memories possible. We were incredibly blessed to have been part of such an outstanding squadron during interesting and exciting times.
All feet wet!
