As of the publishing of the first edition in late October, 2021, over 700,000 people in the U.S. had died of Covid-19.
18 months earlier, on February 28, 2020, that number stood at 0. A week later, 11 people had died in the U.S. Given that and the news coming in from Europe, the author started to collect data and develop a website, covid19directions.com.

By April 10, 2020, the number of dead was approaching 20,00o, and U.S. leadership and social behavior were clearly failing. A year later, a half million Americans had died from the virus.

What went wrong? Why? Why, when we clearly saw the virus coming for us, did we take half-hearted measures to thwart it, actions that were almost comical. The flag of freedom was waved as thousands perished each day. What was going on?
This book is excerpted from the final journal, “Darkest Winter: Journal of a Pandemic”, published May 10, 2021, and focuses on the first month of the journal, comparing it with events a year later. Even with the arrival of vaccines, not much had changed in the social behavior of a large segment of the population.
