This text introduces the five freedoms protected by the First Amendment and explores the historic roots of freedom of expression from John Milton's Areopagitica to the current times. It explores questions surrounding the value of free speech, the role of the press in society, and the public's right to know. The third edition features extensive updates with new chapters focused on challenges to free expression ranging from private restrictions to government-enacted limitations.
