Sinossi

Learn what it takes to explore and succeed in the applied geosciences and energy industry. This book is a collection of interviews from leaders in the fields of business, technology, research and academia. Learn valuable lessons and perspectives from those who have blazed trails and those who are currently advancing energy markets. Geoscientists, engineers, managers, CEOs – from private to public companies – and from advisor to student, this book highlights what it takes to lead in the applied geosciences and energy industry.

  • Interviews with leaders in geoscience who are shaping energy markets – past, present and future;
  • Leadership principles applied in the broader energy industry can also be used in any profession;
  • Perspectives on professional growth in the broad scope of the earth sciences;
  • Diverse interviews with leaders who have worked on all oil-producing continents.
In the last four years, the broad field of the geosciences and the energy industry have undergone massive changes. Record high oil and gas output have been rivaled by growth in alternative forms of energy to meet global demand. The COVID-19 pandemic reduced oil and gas demand by less than 10% in a roughly $100T global economy, illustrating that oil and gas underpins the global economy and remains a necessity for a growing population. The pandemic also accelerated addition of alternative forms of energy in record time, with huge amounts of capital put to work in solar, wind, nuclear and the electrification of the world – from vehicles, to homes and other areas seeking to obviate classic energy sources. Whereas most students with a degree in earth science and an interest in drilling wells joined oil and gas companies three years ago, now they are joining mining companies to find elements required for batteries. Newly minted bachelors and masters in geoscience are also joining business units involved in carbon capture usage and sequestration (CCUS), geothermal exploration and production and in the decommissioning of oil and gas platforms. This fascinating period of the last four years (2019-2023) is documented in interviews with over 30 leaders in geoscience and the greater energy industry.
