Sinossi
Ho avuto il piacere di leggere WHITEBOARDINGS, coautore di poesie di Howard F. SteinandSeth Allcorn, nel corso di due giorni, a piccoli morsi, lasciando che le poesie digeriscano mentre entravo in un terzo spazio tra gli scrittori e le parole. L'ultima riga suona ancora: "cosa è reale?" Ciò che mi sembra reale ora, mentre il libro si stabilizza ancora, è la profondità di questo terzo spazio, quello che [Donald] Winnicott una volta chiamava "spazio potenziale"- che, a differenza di qualsiasi cosa abbia incontrato, risuona sia con meraviglia che desiderio nelle poesie coautrici di Stein e Allcorn. In effetti, ciò che sembra poco riconosciuto, forse evitato inconsciamente persino, nelle montagne della scrittura clinica sullo spazio potenziale, è quanto creativo possa diventare un processo di lutto quando condiviso, attraverso la libera associazione delle parole, su una cosiddetta "lavagna". Un processo in cui il tragico può essere immediatamente rifiutato, rivisitato, reimmaginato e infine lavorato, invece di semplicemente "elaborare". Ho anche una sensazione palpabile - come qualcosa di "andato storto" dopo una giornata estiva di tubi lungo un fiume (vedi poesia di apertura, "River of Snow"). Le parole degli autori diventano mie mentre medito se posso conoscere i misteri del fiume. Può forse "fluire verso l'alto" - una "spirale ascendente" lontano da tutti i "massacri a terra" - o è tutta una "caduta infinita senza fondo"? Non sono sicuro di una risposta - né sono sicuro di volerne una - ma riconosco che la "bara era aperta" mentre leggevo (vedi "Life of Files"), e ho visto ciò che gli autori hanno visto lì, senza battere ciglio, e ho pianto creativamente. Ma ho anche toccato una bellezza strana e forse senza tempo, anche se non altro per un breve momento, prima che la bara fosse chiusa e il cadavere sepolto, bruciato, trasformato in cenere. Avevo testimoniato il culmine di uno spazio potenziale sostenuto, forgiato da un'amicizia trentennale tra i due autori, che offriva non solo ricordi ma promesse a noi, suoi lettori, in una presenza duratura: un vero dono. -Nathan Gerard, Ph.D.

Stein and Seth Allcorn, over the course of two days, in small bites, letting the poems digest as I entered into a third space between the writers and the words. The last line still rings: 'what is real ' What seems real to me now, as the book still settles, is the depth of this third space, what [Donald] Winnicott once called 'potential space'- which, unlike anything I've encountered, resounds with both wonder and longing in Stein and Allcorn's co-authored poems. Indeed, what seems little acknowledged, perhaps unconsciously avoided even, in the mountains of clinical writing on potential space, is just how creative a process of mourning can become when shared, through the free association of words, on a socalled 'whiteboard.' A process where the tragic can be at once refused, revisited, reimagined, and ultimately worked with, instead of merely 'worked through.' I'm also with a palpable feeling - like something 'gone awry' after a summer's day of tubing down a river (see opening poem, 'River of Snow'). The authors' words become my own as I ponder whether I can know the river's mysteries. Does it, can it, 'flow upward' - an 'upward spiral' away from all the 'slaughter on the ground' - or is it all an 'endless falling without a bottom' I'm not sure of an answer - nor sure I want one - but I do recognize that the 'casket was open' as I read (see 'Life of Files'), and I saw what the authors saw there, unflinchingly, and I creatively mourned. But I also touched a strange and perhaps timeless beauty, if only for a brief moment, before the casket was closed and the corpse buried, burned, turned to ash.
