Facsimile of the 1922 Sanborn fire-insurance atlas of Norwalk, Connecticut, reproduced in full color from the Library of Congress copy. It covers the whole city of 27,743 people, newly joined with South Norwalk, from the hat factories, stores and City Hall of South Norwalk and the oyster houses on Norwalk Harbor, through Fort Point and East Avenue, up Wall and Main Streets and the Norwalk River to Winnipauk, and out to Rowayton, Roton Point and Wilson Point on Long Island Sound.
The seventy numbered sheets work block by block from the stores, banks, hotels and theatres along North and South Main Street, Washington Street and Water Street in South Norwalk and Wall Street and Main Street in old Norwalk - the two City Halls, the Post Offices, the State Armory, the Public Library, the Police Station, the Commercial Building, Hoyt's, the Palace, the Regent and the Springwood theatres, the Mahackemo, Central, Germania, Grand Union, Bristol, Clifford, Putnam, Victoria and Norwalk hotels and the Royal James Inn - through the New Haven Railroad depots on State Street and East Avenue and the freight depots on Ann and Commerce Streets, the Connecticut Company car barns, the Connecticut Light and Power plant, the Norwalk Steamboat Company, the Cluett, Peabody shirt factory, the Crofut & Knapp, Davis-Pope, Dryer, American, Young and Rough hat factories and the hatters' fur and fur-dyeing works, the R. & G. Corset and La Dentelle lace factories, the Norwalk Iron Works and Norwalk Lock Company, the Bennett and Cole wire-cloth works, the Church Expansion Bolt, Dikeman tool, Holland and Higley machine, Veco, King-Craymer and R. U. V. electrical works, the Wheeler, Meeker and Arnold foundries, the Jerome and St. George paper mills, the Lowndes, Radel, Sealshipt, Stirling and North Atlantic oyster houses, the Barker marine-engine factory and the Shipping Board storage at Wilson Point, and the Muller Gloria silk mills and Lounsbery & Bissell's Winnipauk Mills, to the Norwalk Hospital, Dr. Wadsworth's Sanitarium, the County Children's Home, the Holy Ghost Scholasticate, the Manresa Institute, the Norwalk High School, the Center Junior High School and the Fitch, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Marvin, Putnam, Washington and Rowayton schools, St. Mary's, St. Joseph's and the Hungarian churches, the Protestant churches of every denomination and the synagogue, the Norwalk Country Club and Boat Club, Roton Point Park, and the residential streets of South Norwalk, Fort Point, Rowayton and Norwalk.
In 1922 the Sanborn Map Company of New York surveyed Norwalk for the fire-insurance trade, drawing the business streets of Norwalk and South Norwalk at fifty feet to the inch and the outer streets, Rowayton and the shore at one hundred feet to the inch. Every building is shown to scale and color-coded for construction (yellow for frame, pink for brick, blue for stone), with heights, uses, windows, party walls, hydrants, water mains and fire stations all marked. The index lists every street and every named business, church, school, hotel, mill and works with the sheet it appears on, and the key map places the colored sheet grid over the whole city.
This Exile Books edition is an unabridged facsimile republication of the atlas: the title sheet, the index, the key map with the report, and all seventy numbered map sheets as issued (1 to 37, 56 to 61, 201 to 226 and 251), printed at 8.5 x 11 inches on premium color paper. Ideal for local historians, genealogists, architects, preservationists and anyone tracing a Norwalk address back to 1922.
