Sinossi

Then We Kissed Her Goodbye is the journal my father, George Tolmie Skinner kept during his R.A.F. training to record his experiences. He joined the Royal Air Force on Sunday, January 17th, 1943. By Friday, August 13th, he was in Dowally, moving to Perth on the 15th. On September 4th, he enjoyed nine days of leave with his brother Jim before leaving Scotland for Liverpool, England. From there, he traveled to Manchester and boarded the Mauritania, a Cunard liner slightly smaller than the Queen Mary and the Titanic, bound for New York City. They crossed the Atlantic, on a zigzag course designed to evade German submarine sonar. The ship traveled as far north as the Arctic Circle during one of the worst storms of the Atlantic season, with the bow rising 70 feet above the water line. Late September 1943 brought six days of relentless storm. When they finally reached New York Harbor, the men wept at the sight of the Statue of Liberty and the glowing city, after five years of blackouts and constant air raids in Europe. My father, only twenty years old, had not seen his homeland at peace since he was fifteen. He had not seen bananas—or toilet paper—in years.

He began his Air Craftsman training, in Terrell, Texas. This journal documents learning to fly PT-17 Stearman’s and AT-6 aircraft, along with his friendships, adventures, and experiences with American civilians while on leave. On April 21st, 1944, he earned his wings and returned to Scotland as a Sergeant pilot.
