She was sixteen years old when she realized she was a human being.
Marian Mitchell Rietman grew up inside a closed religious community in Seattle — the kind of place that decides, on your behalf, who you will be and what you will do with your life. Getting free required everything she had.
What she did with that freedom was remarkable. During the Second World War she served as governess to President Roosevelt's grandchildren on Mercer Island, watching history from a quiet and privileged distance. When the war ended she made her choice — married a soldier, homesteaded the Cascade Mountains, farmed the Great Plains, and raised five boys on land she and her husband carved out of nothing.
Then, when the boys were grown and there was nothing left to build, she discovered the world was larger than she had been allowed to know. She crossed the Aegean. Climbed a Colorado fourteener two months out of the hospital. Danced on a veranda in the Mexican highlands while firecrackers went off in the road.
She began writing her memoirs in 1990. One Slice of Time is what her son found between the lines — the interior life she lived but could never quite bring herself to record, the sense of what things cost and what they meant, the quality that ran beneath the steady surface she presented to the world.
