Riassunto

Billy Ray Banks has never read a book in his life — but he can read weather, read men, and read trouble coming from three counties off. He steps off the bus at Parris Island not knowing his left foot from his right, carrying nothing to his name but his daddy's old boots and a dead uncle's knife.

Leonard Pembroke has read everything. Brooklyn-raised, college-bound, quick with a joke and slow with a rifle, he steps off the same bus wondering what a family like his is doing sending a boy like him someplace like this.

Neither one of them should have lasted a week.

Forty-three strangers become recruits, then a platoon, then — if the island doesn't break them first — Marines: ten brutal weeks that turn boys inside out and hand them back as men, one disaster at a time. Somewhere in the middle of it, a farm boy who can't read a word and a rich kid who's never held a rifle discover that neither of them is going to make it through alone — and that what they're building together might be worth more than either one of them walked in with.

Billy Ray and Leonard is a novel about the strangest, truest kind of family: the one you didn't choose, standing next to you in formation, that decides — somewhere between a Parris Island bus and the worst night either of them will ever live through — that nobody gets left behind.

Written by a retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant who spent three and a half years training recruits at MCRD San Diego, it's funny, unsentimental, and true to the discipline, the fear, and the brotherhood of a real Marine Corps boot camp — and to the plain fact that some of the men who go in as strangers come out, if they're lucky, as brothers.
