Are you ready to be inspired—or inkspired?

A Pencil Grows in Kentucky brings together creative writing lessons, Appalachian history, and powerful poetry to celebrate the voices of young women from Kentucky.
In a groundbreaking program Appalachia Girl Dreaming, seventy young women participated in a one-of-a-kind creative writing workshop. They were guided by lessons in listening, stories of Appalachian women writers and trailblazers, and insights into the craft of poetry. The students wrote their own poems and worked with an editor toward the exciting goal of seeing their work in print.

Inside you’ll discover:

  • Biographies of seven influential Kentucky Appalachian women writers
  • Teaching strategies to spark creativity and foster a positive writing mindset in students
  • An anthology of original poetry written by the students themselves—poems that reveal courage and imagination rooted in Appalachia
Whether you are a teacher, writer, poet, or reader who loves Appalachian literature, women’s studies, or student poetry anthologies, this book offers both guidance and inspiration.
Step inside—and discover the magic of what happens when young women pick up a pencil and reimagine their world.

About the Author

Most people know Jacqueline Jane Hamilton as Mizz JJ—the teacher who loves stories, laughter, and the way words connect us. She started out writing for her high school newspaper, worked as a journalist, studied in London on a Rotary Fellowship, and eventually taught English at Eastern Kentucky University. Along the way, she collected degrees (an MFA and an Ed.D.), found a favorite research topic (listening practices), and even had a dinner date with Goosebumps author R.L. Stine.

Now retired from the classroom, Mizz JJ leads Inkspire Camps and the nonprofit Why We Write Inc., helping writers of all ages find their creative spark. Whether she’s teaching, writing letters, or sharing her love of books, she believes that writing creates happiness—what the world needs now.
