It is 1947 and Annie and Billy Dawson are now married and have gone to Belfast to be with their son John Adams and his wife Mary.  Annie had given birth to her illegitimate son in the Poor House in Belfast, without Billy knowing he was the father, and the child was adopted by a Dr Adams and his wife. But mother and son were reunited when John was told Annie was his mother and got in touch. But for Annie it was a bitter-sweet meeting as it had to be kept secret from her husband Euan McPherson and her daughter Lexie Melville, who made no bones about her views on 'fallen women.' Billy was married to Josie McIntyre when he discovered Annie's secret and revealed his love for Annie, divorced Josie and married her.

But fate was to intervene in Billy and Annie's happiness, when a letter arrived from Lexie, bringing with it the news that she had given up her job at RAF Montrose and come home to Dundee, deeply distressed and alone and begging her mother to help her.

Despite Billy wanting to remain in Ireland, at Annie's pleading, they came back to Dundee to find out what had happened to turn Lexie from a confident, independent woman into a shadow of her former self. But Lexie had some shocking news, that turned all of their lives upside down, reverberating as far away as Canada and leaving Annie with an agonizing decision, whether to follow her heart or her head. And even Billy couldn't help, the decision had to be her's alone.
