This handsome catalogue, co-published by the Saint Louis Art Museum, was produced to accompany an exhibition held there in 2004. Bailey (anthropology, U. of Tulsa, Oklahoma) and Swan (director, Chucalissa Museum, U. of Memphis, Tenn.) have contributed six substantial essays on early Osage art and history, Osage cosmology, daily life, the peyote religion, the impact of wealth from oil reserves on Osage society, and dancing societies and organizations. John Nunley (curator, Saint Louis Art Museum) and E. Sean StandingBear (an Osage) contributed an essay on the symbolism and uses of Osage art. The chapters are illustrated with color plates of works from the exhibition, each with a full entry. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
