'AGAINST THE TIDE' is Wouter Vanhees’ intimate tribute to Mumbai, his adopted hometown between 2022 and 2024. Through a personal visual journey, the book intertwines the city’s shifting landscapes with glimpses into the lives of five friends whose post-hardcore band, Pacifist, forms both soundtrack and inspiration. Their presence, alongside Vanhees’ lens, reveals Mumbai as a chaotic kaleidoscope where contrasting cultures, histories, dream and reality collide. The result is a contemporary portrait of the ‘City of Dreams’, guided by the search for balance and direction against the tide.

Wouter Vanhees (b. Belgium) is a fine art photographer whose work focuses on the interplay between people, architecture, and the passage of time within urban environments. After relocating to Hanoi, Vietnam, Mumbai, India, and today Seoul, Korea, Vanhees began documenting the city's shifting identity amid rapid modernisation. His photography reveals quiet moments of contemplation in the midst of change, exploring how individuals and spaces adapt to evolving social realities. His images have been exhibited internationally and featured in contemporary art and photography platforms.
