This comprehensive reference serves as a vital compilation of early American treaties, organized by country, featuring tables of international negotiators, a chronological diplomatic timeline spanning 1326 to 1834, and a summary of the law of nations synthesized from foundational legal scholars. First published as a single volume in 1827, this final two-volume edition holds a prominent place in Jacksonian-era diplomacy. It was officially adopted by Secretary of State Louis McLane for departmental use and distributed systematically to all active U.S. diplomatic agents and consuls abroad. In addition, Secretary of the Navy Mahlon Dickerson ordered copies for distribution across naval stations and public vessels. While subsequent official treaty series eventually overtook Elliot's work, it remains a heavily utilized resource for its contemporary legal apparatus, particularly Elliot's curation of related early judicial decisions and summaries of international law. Elliot (1784-1846) is simultaneously recognized as the seminal editor of The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adoption of the Federal Constitution.…
