Born of a period of turmoil, marked by racial tension and migration, this rich variety of writings spans the period between the American Civil War and the end of World War I. Organised geographically, these writings shed light on varying concept of"the American identity". This selection features familiar writers such as Kate Chopin and Alice Dunbar Nelson, but also introduces less well-known voices like Sui Sin Far and Abraham Cahan.

Kate Chopin (1850-1904), author of the extremely popular 'The Awakening' , made an important contribution to early feminist literature. Alice Dunbar Nelson (1875-1935) was a prominent figure within the 1920's Harlem Renaissance literary movement.
Elizabeth Ammons is Professor of English at Tufts Unversity and Valerie Rohy has recently completed her PhD there. Both have written exciting new works upon the representation of women, race and sexuality.
