Great stress has been laid on principles, definitions, uniformity of notation, and symbols. The explanations, illustrations, and examples are such as will enable students to apply leading prin ciples to practical work, and teach them to think out and investi gate results for themselves, rather than depend blindly on rules and formulas.

In every Lecture a number of examples have been fully worked out, and, wherever possible, illustrated experiments have been described, so as to encourage students to carry out similar or more elaborate experiments in actual practice, rather than rely on rule-of-thumb proportions.
