Various plates to demonstrate the types of machinery and knowledge needed to build in a variety of soils and substrates along with information on geological formations and boring machines. In very good condition, the binding is quite handsome green pebble finish with smooth calfskin spine and corners. Corners are chipped but highly polished and look like some type of sealant may have been applied—very shiny. Corners are bent. Foxing and tidemarks within. From The North Devon Athenaeum, Barnstable and presented by William Frederick Bork, Esq. Very Good Condition: 8vo: 3/4 leather with green pebbled boards: ridged spine with brown label with gilt lettering in second compartment and gilt lettering at tail with “Barnstable City and Scientific Institution” at bottom: bookplates inside front on pastedown and facing: plates and etchings intact: tidemarks throughout as well as foxing and toning from the outside edge of paper in but text legible and intact: pencil marks: hand-colored plate at pg 173 “Colour of Clays”: “The Architect, Engineer, and Operative Builder’s Constructive Manual: or, Practical and Scientific Treatise on the Construction of Artificial Foundations for Buildings, Railways, &c.
