Have you ever wondered what actually stands between the device you're designing and the person trying to break into it?
If you build firmware for a living, or you're responsible for the security of a connected product, you already know the uncomfortable truth: most attackers don't bother with your cloud infrastructure or your mobile app. They go straight for the firmware, because it's the layer everyone assumes is safe simply because it's hard to see. Is your boot process actually verifying what it thinks it's verifying? Do you know exactly what happens to your cryptographic keys if someone gets physical access to a single unit in the field? If you're not confident in your answers, this book was written for you.
Architecting Secure Embedded Firmware is a complete, practical guide to building embedded systems that can genuinely defend themselves, not just systems that look secure on a datasheet. It starts from first principles and walks through the entire discipline: how a hardware root of trust actually establishes confidence in a device from the moment power is applied, how a properly designed boot chain prevents unauthorized code from ever executing, and how to structure cryptographic keys so that a single compromised unit doesn't take down your entire fleet.
Along the way, you'll work through real engineering questions that most books skip over. How do you decide which physical attacks are actually worth defending against for your specific product, rather than defending against everything and blowing your budget? How do you keep a firmware update mechanism from becoming the very backdoor an attacker uses to compromise every device you've ever shipped? How do you design access control boundaries so that one vulnerable component doesn't automatically hand over control of the whole system?
This book covers:
- Hardware based trust anchors, secure boot design, and how to build a chain of trust that actually holds up under scrutiny
- Practical, disciplined approaches to memory safety, code integrity, and hardening your build and signing pipeline against supply chain compromise
- Cryptographic key hierarchies built for constrained devices, including guidance on preparing for a post quantum future
- Secure communication protocol design for constrained networks, mutual authentication, and update delivery that can't be silently hijacked
- Access control architecture, privilege isolation, and debug interface lockdown that closes the doors attackers rely on most
- Defense against power analysis, electromagnetic leakage, and fault injection, for anyone building devices that face determined physical attackers
- Verification and testing methodology, including fuzzing, formal methods, and a clear path through the certification landscape
- How real industries, consumer products, industrial control systems, automotive electronics, medical devices, and critical infrastructure, actually apply these principles under their own specific constraints
Whether you're an embedded engineer trying to level up your security thinking, a technical lead responsible for a product that regulators are starting to scrutinize, or someone simply trying to understand why firmware security has become such an urgent topic, this book gives you something you can actually use. Not vague principles borrowed from enterprise software security, but engineering guidance built specifically for the constraints, the hardware, and the adversaries that embedded systems actually face.
Your device is going to be in the field for years. The question is whether it's still going to be trustworthy when it gets there. This book will help you make sure it is.

Descrizione dello Store
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free.
