Chateaubriand a toujours estimé qu'il appartenait à une "génération perdue" : celle qui a vu le rationalisme optimiste des Lumière de compromettre dans la faillite sanglante de la Terreur. Adam a voulu goûter du fruit défendu : au lieu de devenir semblable à Dieu, il s'aperçoit qu'il est nu. Odipe croyait régner dans la clarté paisible des énigmes résolues : il ne découvre plus, au coeur de sa destinée, qu'inceste et parricide. Il ne reste plus à Prométhée qu'à nourrir un intense sentiment de culpabilité. Pour incarner ce retour modern eu tragique, le futur mémorialiste ne se contente pas de relire Pascal ou Milton : il renouvelle la poétique du récit. Par la splendeur des images, par la beauté de leur lyrisme, par leur étrangeté onirique, ces trois "nouvelles" ne cesseront pas de projeter sur le XIXe siècle leur éclat de diamant noir.
