Sturdy, still tightly bound softcover copy, minor to moderate wear of covers and text-block, but with neither underlining nor highlighting. Perfectly readable, usable copy. Colorful card-stock wraps, with an Introduction and notes by David Grene. Two-page index. From the publisher blurb, "In this heterodox but serious study of the Odyssey, originally published in 1897, Butler argues that the epic was not only written more than two centuries later than the Iliad, but that the author was a woman, a young Sicilian lady of Trapani. With great insight - and sometimes with whimsical humor - Butler examines the poem not only as a classical scholar but also as a fellow artist. His 'proof' that much of the Odyssey could only have been written by a woman will convince many modern readers, if it did not some of his contemporaries. David Grene, in a new Introduction to the book, writes: 'Butler's commonsense has a special sturdiness. It stands up. It occasionally approaches philistinism; but it never dissolves into verbal trickery and human falsity when we look closer. And in this strangest of books of classical scholarship and criticism, the paradoxical approach, whether you accept Butler's conclusions or not, makes you look at real things in the poem." xxvii [2], 2-277 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…

Member, I.O.B.A. (the Independent On-line Booksellers Association) "Structure" versus "Agency." A phrase that has characterized much social-scientific debate. Does “structure” (the routinized regulations of kinship and marriage, work and reproduction, of race, class and gender) determine history, or is it the “agency” of fully conscious, independently acting, individuals? Structure, Verses, Agency Books isn’t going to solve the debate, but we’ll offer you lots of all three. Versus to verses—we specialize in fine, rare and collectible books, from the fine arts to the social sciences, from poetry to photography, from literature and ethnography to fine bindings and Americana. Condizioni di vendita
I've done my best to state clearly and truthfully the condition of each and
every book I have listed on-line. Sometimes, however, books change condition
insofar as they sit on the shelf for a long time, get moved by customers,
get taken to and from book fairs, and so on. If for some reason you don't
like your purchase or it arrives somehow damaged, or if it doesn't get to
you at all, you might be eligible for a refund within 30 days of the
estimated delivery date. If you've changed your mind about a book that
you've ordered, please contact me or use the "Ask bookseller a question"
link to contact me and I'll respond within two business days.
