Hardcover. "Autobiography of Joseph Scaliger" offers a profound look into the life and mind of one of the most formidable scholars of the Renaissance. Joseph Juste Scaliger, a titan of classical philology and historical chronology, presents his own life story alongside a carefully curated collection of autobiographical selections from his personal correspondence. This volume provides an intimate window into the intellectual rigors and personal convictions of a man whose work redefined the study of ancient history and textual criticism.Complementing Scaliger's own words are his final testament and the poignant funeral orations delivered by his contemporaries and former students, Daniel Heinsius and Dominicus Baudius. These additional texts serve to illustrate the immense impact Scaliger had on the European republic of letters and the deep reverence in which he was held by his peers. From his early education and linguistic mastery to his tenure at the University of Leiden, this collection captures the spirit of a scholar dedicated to the pursuit of truth through rigorous evidence and linguistic precision.A vital resource for those interested in the history of scholarship, Renaissance humanism, and the personal lives of great thinkers, "Autobiography of Joseph Scaliger" remains a testament to the enduring power of the intellect in shaping our understanding of the past. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
