Priestley." / The letter is written on Priestley's letterhead bearing his address of 17 Hertford St., Mayfair [London]. / Sir William Overend Priestley was a British physician and great nephew of Joseph Priestley. He was educated at King's College and Edinburgh University, becoming a Senate Gold Medalist upon his graduation from Edinburgh. He was a professor of obstetrics at King's College in London, working at King's College Hospital, a position he held from 1862 to 1872. In 1865, Priestley "was appointed Physician-Accoucheur to the Princess of Hesse, and to the members of the Orleans family resident in England" (Smith, p. 121). Priestley was knighted in 1893 and became a conservative Member of Parliament for the universities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews in 1896 — See: "David Murray Marshall Hall . . ."). He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (Medical Directory for 1872, p. 198). Priestley is the author of "numerous papers on natural history and medicine" (Smith, p. 121). / The case notes (1870-74) of Priestley and Dr. William Smoult Playfair are held in the King's College Hospital and "describe medical disorders and procedures such as renal disease, pneumonia, rickets, bronchitis, croup, cyanosis, convulsions, diarrhoea, chorea, febricula (fever), essential paralysis, pleurisy, typhoid fever, and congenital heart defect. Case notes give patient name, address, admission date, and ward." (KH/CN3/3 1870, Jun-1874, Jul.).
