"Bar and Buskin Being Memories of Life, Law and the Theatre" is an engaging and sophisticated memoir that bridges the seemingly disparate worlds of the British legal profession and the vibrant London stage at the turn of the 20th century. Written by Edward F. Spence, a distinguished King's Counsel who also served as a prominent drama critic, this work offers a dual perspective on the intellectual and cultural life of his era.

The narrative provides a rich tapestry of experiences, from the rigorous demands of the courtroom and the personalities of the English bar to the glamour and evolution of the Victorian and Edwardian theater. Spence shares vivid anecdotes involving notable legal figures and legendary theatrical performers, capturing the spirit of an age defined by both tradition and dramatic transformation. His observations on the craft of acting, the mechanics of playwriting, and the social standing of the legal elite provide invaluable historical context.

With wit and clarity, "Bar and Buskin Being Memories of Life, Law and the Theatre" serves as both a personal reflection and a broader cultural history. It is an essential read for those interested in the history of English law, the development of modern dramatic criticism, and the intersection of professional life and the arts.
