"My life, so full of romance, may sound like a dream to the matter-of-fact reader; nevertheless, everything I have written is stricktly true; much has been omitted, but nothing has been exaggerated." - from the Historical Introduction. "Behind the Scenes is an extraordinary book for the facts that it reveals about nineteenth-century America and one extraordinary woman who participated in the drama of some of our country 's most profound events. It is important, also, for its innovative literary form and the function it serves in uncovering the effects readers, especially reviewers and scholars, can have upon a book's fate. Written in a conversational, first-person narrative style, Behind the Scenes portrays people, places, and events familiar to every school girl or boy from perspectives few have ever been privileged to view. Though it might read more "like a romance" than an actual autobiography, Elizabeth Keckley 's story is true. As the personal testimony of a woman who went from being the legal property of a slavehoder to being a proprietor with more than twenty employees of her own, it delights and motivates. Its descriptions of Keckley's travels and of her friends provide intriguing glimpses of nineteenth-century interracial relationships and of details about the free black middle class whose very existence was generally as veiled and invisible to her nineteenth-century readers as it is to many of us today. As a literary genre, Behind the Scenes defies simple categorization. It is a page-turner memoir. Keckley's account of the offstage demeanors of Jefferson Davis, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Charles Sumner, and other leading men of the Civil War era reveals soft, even spiritual, moments; strong dark forebodings; and startling instances of jealousy, intrigue, and misguided motivations." - excerpt from the Historical Introduction.…

Descrizione dello Store
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
