Lyra Nightshade has spent most of her life surviving.
After the violent loss of her mother, she was forced to navigate the shadows of the Low Grip alone-a sprawling city woven through the roots of ancient trees where the forgotten struggle to endure beneath the glittering heights of the elves above. Desperate and hungry, she expected her first mistake to be her last.
Instead, she found Kaelen Forge Heart.
The master blacksmith offered her a place in his forge, a purpose, and a chance to master the strange affinity for metal she had spent years hiding. There she found something even more unexpected: friendship, belonging, and a family she never thought she would have again.
And then she met Valen.
As Lyra's bond with the quiet elven warrior deepens into something powerful and undeniable, her world begins to expand beyond the walls of the smithy. Alongside her sharp-tongued best friend Tally, the enigmatic Thalric Vane, and the stubborn dwarf Varrik Stone-Sojourn, Lyra is drawn into secrets far larger than herself.
Whispers spread through taverns and guard posts.
Rumors of a Lich King.
Rumors of an army of the dead.
Rumors of an undead commander traveling to Vaelstrum itself to meet with the King and Queen.
As ancient dangers stir and old histories threaten to repeat themselves, Lyra and her companions must uncover the truth before the fragile peace of the Sunderlands shatters. But some battles are fought with more than steel, and the bonds tying them together may prove just as dangerous as the enemy gathering in the darkness.
Because when the dead begin to march, survival may depend not only on strength...
...but on the family they have chosen to become.
