Betrayed Generation is an autobiographical account of the author s life in Czechoslovakia and later in Denmark and England during 1945 1960. It is a continuation of Trust and Deceit (published by Vallentine Mitchell 2006) in which the author describes how, as a Jewish teenager in Central Europe, she survived the Holocaust. After liberation from fascism in 1945, the experience of freedom, opportunities to study, to work and to explore new aspects of living, imposed new challenges. Tainted by the experiences during the Second World War, many young people felt that communism was a system that would provide a just and fair society where all the wrongs of fascism would be remedied. They embraced, with enthusiasm, the communist ideals and failed to see that they themselves helped to bring to power another dictatorship and an evil system, where human rights were constantly violated. Thus hopes were dashed and ideals betrayed. The description of the author s personal life, her experiences as a scientist the ups and downs of her relationships, are skillfully blended with the political and scientific background of the time. Restrictions of personal freedom by the totalitarian regime became too much and forced the author to escape, illegally, taking incredible risks. During and after the escape the author was helped by other scientists and the story illustrates the world-wide solidarity of the scientific community even during the darkest period of the Cold War.

Recensione: There is nothing biologically more important than to survive life-threatening situations without losing human dignity. History is full of tragic examples, however, none on such a scale as the Holocaust in Europe in the last century. There were not many Jews who survived it and still fewer who were able to give an accurate personal account. In Trust and Deceit the author reveals the fascinating psychology of a teenage girl dealing with the immense cruelties of the world. The book inspires the search for how genocide could be prevented in the future, and the truly heroic story will inspire anyone to survive against all odds. Trust and Deceit is a true and thrilling personal account of our modern history and accurately depicts the social and demographic structure of European society during the Holocaust years.
