"Biological Memory" explores the provocative intersection of biology and psychology, proposing a unified theory of life based on the concept of mnemonic properties. Eugenio Rignano investigates the fundamental processes of heredity and development, arguing that biological phenomena cannot be fully explained by purely physical or chemical mechanisms. Instead, he posits that living organisms possess a form of "biological memory" that guides their growth and evolution, allowing them to retain and transmit ancestral experiences across generations.

The work delves into the nature of the vital impulse and seeks to bridge the gap between organic evolution and the conscious mind. By examining the mechanisms of inheritance through a mnemonic lens, Rignano challenges the prevailing materialistic views of his time and offers a unique perspective on the purposive nature of life. This treatise is a significant contribution to theoretical biology and the philosophy of science, providing a deep dive into early 20th-century debates surrounding vitalism and the origin of complex biological systems. It remains a fascinating study for those interested in the history of evolutionary thought and the philosophical foundations of the life sciences.
