"The Consolation of Philosophy" is a foundational work of Western philosophy and literature, composed by the Roman statesman Boethius while imprisoned and awaiting execution. This influential text takes the form of a dialogue between the author and Lady Philosophy, who offers comfort and guidance by exploring the nature of true happiness, the fickleness of fortune, and the complex relationship between divine providence and human free will. Integrating elements of Platonism and Stoicism, the work provides a profound exploration of ethics and the intellectual search for ultimate truth.

This edition features the important 15th-century verse translation by John Walton, which was instrumental in introducing Boethius's thought to the medieval English-speaking world. Walton's translation captures the rhythmic beauty and philosophical gravity of the original text, transforming it into a culturally significant English work. Edited by Mark Science, this version preserves the historical and linguistic integrity of the translation while showcasing the enduring legacy of Boethius's masterpiece. As a vital link between the classical tradition and the Middle Ages, "The Consolation of Philosophy" remains a compelling study of the human spirit's resilience and the eternal pursuit of wisdom.
