The authors explain how to use read-aloud discussions in early childhood classrooms to support the literacy and literary growth of students. They discuss the development of a growth mindset for teachers who want to expand their use of literature discussions; preparing for successful and purposeful discussions and the physical, emotional, and temporal spaces involved in the early reading environment; book choices to promote children's deep and connected conversations; prompting students’ responses during literature discussion; using read-alouds to teach basic literacy skills like letters, letter and sound correspondence, punctuation, left-to-right progression, the parts of a book, and comprehension skills; integrating read-alouds across and beyond curricular areas of learning; and planning for literature discussions, including questioning and modeling, classroom expectations, management techniques, and how to get all children involved. Each chapter includes background information and vignettes of teacher and student voices, as well as ideas to get started and continue supporting one’s own learning.
