Paperback. The men and women in this book were betrayed twice. First by the enemies who caught them. Then by the very institution that swore to protect them. Burned Intelligence pulls back the curtain on a truth the CIA has never fully admitted in public: that some of the worst intelligence disasters in American history had nothing to do with enemy genius, and everything to do with what happened inside Langley's own walls, months and sometimes years before a single shot was fired. You will step into a canoe on a dark Cuban river in 1962, alongside two agents paddling toward a mission history has almost completely erased, one that helped detect the missiles behind the most dangerous nuclear standoff of the twentieth century, only to be abandoned once the crisis passed. You will sit at a Georgetown lunch table in 1985 as a CIA officer hands classified documents to a Soviet contact, unraveling a decade of American espionage inside the Soviet Union in a single afternoon. You will walk into a Beirut restaurant in 2011, the site of a fatal tradecraft mistake so avoidable it still stuns former officers who lived through it. And you will trace a technical failure so absurd that an entire communications network unraveled through nothing more than a basic internet search, costing dozens of agents their lives across two continents. This is not spy fiction. Every name, every date, every betrayal in this book is drawn from declassified files, congressional investigations, court records, and the accounts of officials who were there. What emerges is not a tale of brilliant adversaries outsmarting America. It is something far more unsettling: a six decade pattern of warnings ignored, tradecraft allowed to grow careless, and human beings sent into extraordinary danger by an institution that had the time, the information, and the resources to protect them, and did not.Readers of Legacy of Ashes, The Spymasters, and The Billion Dollar Spy will recognize the caliber of research here, but Burned Intelligence asks a question those books do not: what if the greatest threat to American intelligence was never the enemy at all?You will meet the widow who spent her life defending a husband her own country called a traitor. The contractor who warned Washington for years before anyone listened, and paid for it with his career. The officer investigated for a decade for a crime he never committed, while the real traitor worked two floors away. And the defector who was never even interviewed, whose fabrications helped send a country to war.Written with the pace and tension of a thriller and the rigor of investigative history, Burned Intelligence does not simply recount espionage failures. It builds, case by devastating case, an argument that will change how you see every headline about intelligence failure that comes after it. Once you understand the pattern, you will not be able to unsee it.Some networks make the history books. This one is about the ones that did not, and the price paid by the people inside them.
