Descrizione libro 1st ed., 1920. 400 pp., frontis., + 15 maps & plans, of which 8 are fldg., plates + a facsimile letter. Original red cloth; 22 x 15cm. Spine faded; slight wear to front hinge; inscribed; a little marginal lining and annotation to the preface only; o/w V.G. Two Cuttings Tipped-in, Extra. Written from his diaries, this is the personal story of the author's campaign in Mesopotamia during the First World War. He was serving as major-general in 1915 when, in conjunction with naval forces up the Tigris, he took Amara. Defeated at Ctesiphon, he fell back upon Kut, where the army was besieged. General Townshend decided to hold out with his division of 10,000 combatant troops against a superior besieging force of Turks and Arab conscripts after his abortive attempt to capture Baghdad. The Siege of Kut lasted 147 days – an epic of endurance, starvation and disease – until finally Townshend surrendered. Seventy per cent of the British and fifty per cent of the Indian emaciated survivors perished on their 1,200 mile trek to captivity whilst previous attempts to rescue Townshend's division had cost a Relief Force 23,000 casualties. It had been intended that his freedom would be bought with a bag of gold but T. E. Lawrence unfortunately lost it! Fortunately, however, the author survived and went on to write this compelling and informative narrative. The book is divided into five parts covering the following: Kurna, Kut, Ctesiphon, The Siege of Kut, and Constantinople. Illustrated with a frontispiece and fifteen maps and plans, eight of which are folding plates, this is a Scarce First Edition copy with two cuttings tipped-in, extra. Codice articolo C123B366
