Octavo (19x11cm) tan leather on 5 raised bands with red spine label gilt titled & leather corners with tan sprinkled paper covers (spine newer/ corners worn/ edges rubbed) All edges rouge. Titlepage with vignette of floral design + [iii]-viii =Preface. + 204pp + 12pp of index. Neat pencil notes on fly leaf and TP dated 1877 by Edward Aubrey. End papers browned and some light foxing to a few pages but a neat tight copy of this Cat book. Deals with the cat through the ages written in the form of letters and poems with many clarifying foot notes. *A charming book - of the 11 leaves of plates, 10 are engravings by the Dutch engraver Theodorus Otten (signed "T.O." or "T. Otten") of cat drawings by Charles-Antoine Coypel (signed "C. Coypel" or "Car. Coypel"). Pictured are a cat-goddess, cat pharaoh, marble cat statue on the mausoleum of the Duchess of Lesdigui res, costumed cat performers of an opera (the text of which is printed on p. 190-204), and a cat on the deathbed of her mistress whose lawyers at her bedside are drawing up a will in favor of the cat; also included are a cat medal and a cat genealogy.
