Riassunto: "Your Child and Tests" is a parent-friendly book that helps to demystify the complex world of educational and psychological testing. Parents will learn how tests--such as proficiency tests, IQ tests, personality tests, college entrance tests, and others--are used (and sometimes misused) and how they potentially can affect their children's lives, possibly in dramatic ways. What sets this book apart from others is its clear yet frank explanations of test-related issues that many parents find intimidating, confusing and overwheliming. "Your Child and Tests" discusses some of the most important and controversial issues of testing relevant to today's parents and their children, and it will help parents not only understand the different types of tests, but also the appropriate use of the results.

-How tests can affect your child's future

-Are tests really needed

-What an IQ is

Dall'autore: (Adapted from Foreword of "Your Child and Tests")

Why this book? So many books start out with this question and in this regard this book is no different. But where this book parts from others is in its simplicity and clarity. Over the 25-plus years that I have been a practicing psychologist, I came to realize that parents often were presented with unnecessarily complicated test results in the form of confusing numbers and technical language. Worse yet, mothers and fathers had few places to turn for clear, practical answers. When they did ask questions, their heads often were filled with more of the same confusing technical talk.

As my own children entered school and had to face those dreaded proficiency tests, I began to look more closely at how schools were using tests and how these tests could affect the lives of children. I decided to investigate what was available to help parents really understand the seemingly mystical world educational and psychological testing. A visit to several bookstores revealed a scarcity of reader-friendly books on the subject.

So back to the question of "why this book?" Because parents more than anyone should know what their child's test results really mean, how tests are really used, and how tests can affect their child's life. They need to be informed in clear and precise language. There may arise a time when parents may want to challenge how tests are being used, especially when they are used to make important and sometimes life-altering decisions about their child. The only way to do this effectively is to be informed.

This is not just another book. It's more than just words on paper. It's something I believe in, and I hope that you--parents--will find it helpful.
