What is the future of Christinaity in the 21st century' Are Western socities growing more secular, leaving cherished religious traditions behind' Or has modernity's secularising currents generated equally powerful desecularising and resecularising currents' Should secularisation theory, the dominant paradigm in the social scientific study of religion for much of the 20th century, be thrown away and out in the dustbin, as somes scholars have suggested' Or, does it remain useful, even indispensible, despite its limitations' Such questions have attracted increasing attention from scholars in many disciplines during recent years and are at the heart of this collection of essays, the majority of whom come from New Zealand.
