Every autumn, on the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, Korea stops. Highways fill for hundreds of miles, kitchens fill with the smell of pine needles and steamed rice cakes, and families gather to set a table for the ancestors who came before them. This is Chuseok — Korea's harvest festival, and the most deeply felt holiday in the Korean year.
This is the complete guide to what Chuseok is, where it came from, and how it is actually celebrated.
Across fourteen chapters, this book traces the festival from its legendary origins in the Silla kingdom to the crowded expressways and department-store gift sets of the present day — and explains the customs at the heart of it with the care they deserve.
Inside you will find:
- The ancient roots of Chuseok and the famous legend of the gabae weaving contest — told with honest historical nuance
- How the lunar calendar sets the date, and why it moves every year
- Charye: how families honor their ancestors at home, and what actually goes on the memorial table
- Seongmyo and beolcho: visiting and tending ancestral graves before the holiday
- The Great Homecoming — the largest annual migration in Korea
- Songpyeon: the half-moon rice cake at the heart of Chuseok, with a full recipe and the technique families pass down
- Traditional Chuseok dishes you can genuinely cook at home
- Folk traditions and games, from ganggangsullae to ssireum
- Hanbok and holiday dress
- Modern gift-giving etiquette and how the holiday is changing
- Chuseok in North Korea, and how customs vary by region
- How the Korean diaspora celebrates far from home
- A practical chapter on building your own respectful Chuseok
- Surprising facts, and a closing look at where the festival is headed
Illustrated throughout with evocative photography, written in clear and respectful language, and organized so you can read it cover to cover or dip into a single tradition.
Whether you are Korean and want the history behind the rituals you grew up with, learning the language and culture, planning a visit, or simply curious about the holiday behind the harvest moon — this is the guide to start with.

We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
