xvi, [2], 974 pages. Illustrated end paper. The dust jacket has wear, tears, chips, and soiling. Mark Mayo Boatner III (28 June 1921 10 June 2006) was an American soldier, historian, and author. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in the June 1943 class. During his career, he earned a master's degree in international affairs from the US Army War College and George Washington University. He served as a combat infantryman in Italy during World War II. He also saw active duty during the Korean War. In 1952 Boatner coauthored Battery Duties: A Ready Reference Manual for Battery Personnel with Robert F. Cocklin. He wrote Army Lore and the Customs of the Service in 1954. While an assistant professor of military history at West Point, he researched and wrote The Civil War Dictionary, which was published in 1959. Soon after, he served at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe at Paris, France. In 1966, Boatner published Encyclopedia of the American Revolution (Revised editions would be released in 1974 and 1994). He authored Landmarks of the American Revolution in 1973. He retired from the army with the rank of colonel. This third printing, during the years of the Civil War Centennial, represents a snapshot in time with respect to the status of Civil War scholarship, interpretation, and the acquisition of additional factual information and knowledge. It can serve as a baseline against which later revisions can be compared and differences/supplemental information identified and analyzed. For more than sixty years The Civil War Dictionary has been the most complete, authoritative, and handy reference book on what has been called the Second American Revolution, 1861-1865. Periodically updated throughout sixteen printings, this invaluable volume has more than 4,000 entries, alphabetically arranged and carefully cross-referenced. Among them: -- 2,000 biographical sketches of Civil War leaders. both military and civilian -- extensive descriptions of all 20 campaigns and entries on lesser battles, engagements and skirmishes -- 120 armies, departments, and districts, as well as such famous smaller units as the Iron Brigade, the 20th Maine, and the Pennsylvania Reserves -- plus naval engagements, weapons, issues and incidents, military terms and definitions, politics, literature, statistics, and 86 specially prepared maps and diagrams.
