Command Decision (2007) ? Elizabeth Moon Orbit ? ISBN: 9781841493794 ? Condition: Used Spaceworn but battle-ready from Crappy Old Books Welcome back to the part of the galaxy where logistics matter, relatives are a health hazard, and one bad choice can get your entire fleet turned into glitter. Command Decision is Elizabeth Moon in full Vatta?s War mode: fleets, politics, merchants-turned-military, and one very determined Ky Vatta trying to hold everything together with strategy, stubbornness, and not nearly enough ships. If you like your space opera with: Actual consequences Family drama in zero gravity And spreadsheets hiding behind the explosions ?you?re in exactly the right star system. Condition: Used (like most of the ships, and all of the characters) When Crappy Old Books says Used , we mean: The cover has toured sofas, beds, backpacks, and maybe one ill-advised ?I?ll just read on the bus and not miss my stop? incident The spine shows noble battle-crease lines, as befits a book about hard choices and tactical stress All pages present and firmly attached: no missing chapters, no DIY edit that removes the bit where everything gets worse before it gets better Some honest cosmetic scuffing: softened corners, the faint patina of having been read by at least one human who cared more about the story than preserving resale condition No catastrophic coffee spills, no mystery stains from deep space, just proper, old-fashioned I was read wear. What?s going wrong in space this time? Short version: everything . Longer version (still minimal spoilers): Trade routes: wrecked Communication systems: sabotaged Bad guys: organised Good guys: underfunded and really tired Ky Vatta, certified magnet for trouble, is now commanding actual fleets rather than just trying to keep one ship intact and marginally profitable. This involves: Outthinking people who have more ships, more guns, and fewer scruples Herding allies, ex-allies, and dubious ?we?re sort of on your side for now? types Juggling family loyalties, corporate interests, and the minor, tedious issue of staying alive Expect: Space battles with tactics that would make your old maths teacher weirdly proud Political manoeuvring that proves the enemy isn?t always the one firing at you People making terrible decisions for understandable reasons and then having to fix them at speed There are no mystical prophecies, no Chosen Ones, and zero destiny swords. Just competence, consequences, and the occasional explosion. Why a Used copy is extremely on-brand It is frankly suspicious when a military space opera looks mint. From Crappy Old Books , this Used copy: Already looks like it?s survived a campaign or two Frees you from the burden of treating it like a fragile artefact ? read it in the bath (carefully), on the train, under a flickering lamp, it?s fine Carries the quiet reassurance that someone else has already gone through the stress of ?oh no no NO how are they getting out of this ?? This is a working book. A field manual. A companion for late nights and ?just one more chapter? oh, it?s 2am? decisions. Ideal for readers who: Like their space opera with logistics, strategy, and family drama rather than mystical space wizards Appreciate protagonists who are competent but not magically infallible Enjoy series where actions in book one still matter in book four Want that sweet spot between ?pew pew pew? and ?let?s talk about supply lines and morale? Also perfect if you: Have a soft spot for slightly broken families trying to do better Believe ?merchant fleet? can, with enough bad luck and determination, become ?resistance movement? Prefer your sci-fi grounded in ?how would this actually work?? rather than ?because space magic? Mission brief (a.k.a. the practical bit) Title: Command Decision Author: Elizabeth Moon Series: Vatta?s War (one of the later ones, i.e. Definitely Not Where You Start? but Very Much Where Things Kick Off) Publisher: Orbit (2007) ISBN: 9781841493794 Condition: Used ? prev.
