hardback, the fourth and best edition, octavo, a later binding in quarter calf, preserving earlier leather boards and with renewed endpapers. Gilt title to spine. Armorial bookplate of a previous owner, likely Joseph Brocklebank, to the front pastedown, the body of text unmarked & the binding tight. This copy contains a trimmed and mounted frontis, and nine of fourteen plates, but additionally has some 200 carefully trimmed and titled copper engravings mounted on both sides of thirty-two leaves at the end of the volume. We believe these to be John Johnston's engravings from Historiae Naturalis, published first in 1657.
