Contains an alphabetical table and texts explained. [4],iv,[2],660,*661-*664,661-978,[16]p. ; 2?.ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Thomas Stackhouse (1677?1752) was an English theologian and controversialist. The major work of Stackhouse was his New History of the Holy Bible from the Beginning of the World to the Establishment of Christianity, which he brought out in numbers from 1733 and then published in three folio volumes in 1737. The genesis of the work was with two booksellers, John Wilford and Thomas Edlin; Stackhouse wrote a pamphlet about them. A second edition came out in numbers in 1742?4, and was published in two folio volumes, with a dedication to his patron, Bishop Edmund Gibson. It was then often reprinted, with additional notes, by other divines. John Trusler compiled from it in 1797 A Compendium of Sacred History. In 1722, as "A Clergyman of the Church of England", addressed a printed letter to Bishop John Robinson, on the "miseries and great hardships of the inferior clergy in and about London". It was reissued, and the later editions had his name on the title-page. (Wikipedia)CONDITION: This edition is in overall "very good" condition, especially for its age. The binding appears to be original, in "good" condition, as leather has eroded from front covers. Heavily scuffed. Two of seven sections of the spine are missing. Binding is loose, yet textblock remains solid. Ex-library "rare book room" bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown. Some but very little foxing and discoloration throughout. Vintage marginalia and annotation, presumably from the period, is within the margins and at the foot occasionally throughout, particularly within the first 250 pages. Leaves show some chipping, but are beautifully, very lightly toned, and are lovely at almost 300 years old. A beautiful piece of theological history, and a very nice edition for an antiquarian book collector. At almost 8 lbs., due to the size and weight of this edition, additional postage may be necessary.
