The Congo and the Founding of its Free State: A Story of Work and Exploration These volumes are from the library of the prominent African American family of John Wesley Cromwell who in 1887 was described as "the best English scholar in the United States." And his granddaugter Dr. Adelaide Cromwell Hill who was the first African-American faculty member hired by Smith College. She went on to be a sociology professor at Boston University, where she founded the African American Studies program. She died in june, 2020 at the age of 99.Both volumes are signed by Adelaide C. Two handsome volumes, splendidly bound in highly decorated finely woven green cloth. With bright gilt lettering and striking decoration of the British Crown & Lion on a shield adorned with a bejeweled African woman perched on the edge of the escutcheon, her arms flowing into the laurel wreath that surrounds the British crown. The gilt and design on the spine are sunfaded. Very sturdy and tight volumes. With the signature in pencil of "Adelaide C. Hill" on the front endpapers of both volumes. With the armorial bookplate of noted Boston Architect Clarence F. Blackall on the front paste-downs. Note: Clarence Howard Blackall(1857 1942) was a Boston architect who is estimated to have designed 300 theatres. His designs include theColonial Theatre,Wilbur Theatre, Modern and Metropolitan (now the Wang Center for Performing Arts) theatres. The volumes are profusely illustrated with over one hundred full-page plates and in-text drawings, multi-folding maps, as well as with the 3 very large maps folded into the binding pockets at the rear of the books. He is mainly known for his search for the source of theNile, work he undertook as an agent ofKing Leopold II of Belgium, which enabled the occupation of theCongo Basin region, and for his command of theEmin Pasha Relief Expedition. He wasknightedin 1897. This two-volume work of exploration, history, and socio-political-economy is the result of Stanley's expedition up the Congo River in 1879-84 and his attempts to re-open the interior for King Leopold of Belgium. From this journey came the establishment of the Congo State, the first free commercial state in Equatorial Africa. Henry Stanley was one of the most popular figures of the 19th Century.
