It's not the job title. Not the car. Not the version of a good life everyone around you nodded along to when you built it. That's a definition you inherited, and chasing it is why you're tired.
I have a Ph.D. in psychology, and I've spent the years since coaching more than a thousand people — parents who hit every milestone on the list and still felt like guests in their own lives, lawyers who chose law for someone else's reasons and stayed miserable in it for decades.
Then a client named George (a CEO) told me he hadn't taken a vacation in fifteen years. George had hit every goal on paper. His life still didn't feel like his. That conversation changed how I coach, for good.
Here's what I found: underneath every goal my clients handed me was a feeling they actually wanted.
Freedom. Ease. Connection.
Not the promotion — the freedom it was supposed to buy. Not the house — the ease of finally exhaling in it. Not the relationship everyone said made sense on paper — the connection you were hoping it would actually give you.
Those three feelings are the real target.
A Very Cool Life is what you get when you build toward them on purpose instead of chasing someone else's scorecard.
The Very Cool Life Code hands you the seven keys for doing that: U.P.G.R.A.D.E.
Universal Law.
Radical Responsibility.
Going Inward First.
Routines.
Alignment.
Deciding As If.
Elevating Your Environments.
Every key comes with a real story attached — the life-changing ski trip I almost talked myself out of, the house I waited for instead of grabbing the wrong one, the pattern in three failed relationships that turned out to be me.
Somewhere along the way you were taught to look outside yourself, see what everyone else was doing, and do that.
This book asks a different question: what percentage of the life you're currently living would you say is actually yours?
A Very Cool Life is an abnormal life. That's the point.
You're six inches away from it. That's the distance between your ears.
